04/19/2024

Quote of the week:

“When life gives you something heavy, lift it.”
                             - PTDC editorial director Lou Schuler after shoveling a foot of snow from his driveway
A note from Jonathan Goodman:

The PTDC offices are closed this week, giving our team a well-deserved break after the most productive, challenging, and unpredictable year in my company’s 10-year history.

We created two new programs this year: Online Trainer Academy Level 2 and Online Trainer Coaching.

We continue to grow and refine Online Trainer Academy Level 1, our flagship certification program, in response to rapid changes in the fitness industry.

In addition to all that, I’m deep in the weeds on an even bigger project that I’ll announce in 2021.

That’s why it’s a good time to look back at the best content we produced and highlighted in 2020.

We wish you a peaceful and safe holiday season, and a healthy and prosperous 2021.

The Best Fitness Content of 2020

Each Sunday, a dedicated team of volunteers brings you Best Fitness Content, a roundup of the best articles, videos, podcasts, and social media posts they came across that week.

They also do an annual compilation of the best of the best. (You can find every yearly review here.)

This year’s top content includes:

  • Best article: “Why Fitness Is Not Essential in American,” a call to action for the fitness industry from longtime PTDC contributor Kevin Mullins.

  • Best video: “Programming for the Novice Athlete,” a comprehensive guide to creating safe and effective workouts for high school and college athletes from Tex McQuilkin.

  • Best social media post: “Why Don’t You Stick to Talking About Nutrition?”, an argument for taking a stand on important social issues by Krista Scott-Dixon.

  • Best podcast: “Why Most Injuries Happen, and How to Prevent Them,” by Marianne Kane with guest Travis Pollen, a discussion of not just how to avoid injuries, but how to identify them in the first place.

All that, plus 16 more great articles, videos, posts, and podcast episodes by some of the most brilliant coaches, authors, and entrepreneurs in the fitness industry.

The Best of the PTDC 2020
We had a busy year at the PTDC, producing articles, essays, and two episodes a week of the Online Trainer Show podcast, in addition to Stronger Sundays and Best Fitness Content.

Here’s what we consider our best work:

  • Best article: “How Five Coaches Grew Their Online Business in Difficult Times,” a look at how online trainers in four countries found ways to thrive while much of the fitness industry struggled.

  • Best commentary: “The Fitness Industry Is Broken – A Story About Hope,” an indictment of the fragility of our business and optimism for a more resilient future.

  • Best podcast episode: “How to Handle Sexual Harassment with Online Training Clients,” an exposĂ© of the daily indignities experienced by female coaches.

  • Best social media post: “Nine Truths About Personal Trainers Every Client Should Know,” a reality check for those who have unrealistic impressions of who we are and what we do.
