Quote of the week:

“The decision to be open and honest on social media comes from a space of love. It would not be loving to tell you I have it all figured out when I don’t.

Even though I like to be ‘in control,’ letting go can be equally powerful. It’s helped me become a more honest and happy version of myself.”

1. Selling belief is your job – Jonathan Goodman

“Professor Dumbledore? Can I ask you something?”

“Obviously, you’ve just done so,” Dumbledore smiled. “You may ask me one more thing, however.”

“What do you see when you look in the mirror?”

“I? I see myself holding a pair of thick, woolen socks.”

Harry stared.

“One can never have enough socks,” said Dumbledore. “Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn’t get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books.”

The Mirror of Erised, Dumbledore tells Harry, “shows us nothing more or less than the deepest, most desperate desire of our hearts.”

Based on
what author J.K. Rowling revealed about him after finishing the series, we understand Dumbledore wasn’t telling the truth about his desires. We also understand why he would invent such a simple story for the young and innocent Harry.

The story illustrates the sales problem faced by almost every personal trainer:

You’re trying to sell something your prospects don’t actually want.

Just as the Hogwarts headmaster doesn’t want more books, so your prospects haven’t come to you for fat loss or muscle gain.

In almost every case, they’ve tried and failed to accomplish the very thing you’re promising to help them achieve.

They don’t lack information about their problem, or a process to solve it. What they lack is belief.

Give them that belief in themselves and you’ll make the sale. Fail, and you’ll flounder.

Selling belief is your job. Coaching is secondary.

2. Your next decision can transform your life – Ren Jones

Fewer than eight years ago, I was working 12 to 14 hours a day to build someone else's dream. Driving all over the place. Training people. Managing an office. Recruiting a team.

I got pretty good at it.

But then I started losing family members. First my big brother, then my big sister, then my mom. And I got really bad at life.

I earned a demotion at work—several, actually. Had my vehicle repossessed. I lost my apartment and had to sleep in someone's basement.

At one point, I couldn't even qualify for a bank checking account.

Today, I own a business. I'm respected in my field. I wake up every day knowing I own me. I have no résumé, and I hope I go the rest of my life without ever applying for another job.

I’m far from wealthy, but a thing I created now pays my bills, and leaves me with enough money to tithe, save, invest, and occasionally buy sneakers.

I believe in comebacks. I believe in your ability to change. I believe a transformation can start with the very next decision you make.

That’s why I’m not ashamed to tell my story. The bottom is the only place I've ever seen a climb start.

Are you ready to begin yours?

Here’s what podcast cohosts Jonathan Goodman, Carolina Belmares, and Ren Jones talked about this week on the Online Trainer Show:

In Episode 27, How to Know Who to Believe on the Internet, Jon shares examples of how easy it is to lie and deceive people online.

The best way to avoid getting scammed is to form relationships with people you respect, and also pay attention to the people they respect.

If you’re tempted to do business with someone from outside this circle of trust, at least be willing to do a little investigative work. Follow their online footprint. See who they know, and who knows them.

And if their story seems too good to be true? It’s almost certainly fiction.

In Episode 28, Building Your Support Systems, the team talks about the “helicopter training” trap that so many online trainers fall into.

It’s when you offer too much of yourself—too much support, too much availability—without firm boundaries. It not only burns you out, it sets the client up for disappointment.

The episode offers better ways to support your clients while also preserving your personal life and mental health.
